Spiritual fasting — the complete Christian guide.
A spiritual fast humbles the body, sharpens prayer, and creates space for breakthrough. This is the complete guide — types of biblical fasts, how to start, what to pray, how to break — plus the free 30-page Avodah Dynamics Spiritual Fast PDF.
Spiritual fasting is one of the oldest Christian disciplines and one of the most neglected. Jesus didn't say if you fast — He said when (Matthew 6:16). This guide gives you the full picture: what a spiritual fast is, the types of fasts in the Bible, how to actually start one, and how to use the hunger as a prayer trigger.

What is a spiritual fast?
A spiritual fast is intentional abstention from food (or another comfort) for a set period, to seek God in focused prayer. Scripture treats it as normal Christian rhythm — Moses fasted 40 days (Exodus 34), Esther's people fasted 3 days (Esther 4), Jesus fasted 40 days at the start of His ministry (Matthew 4), and Acts 13 shows the early church fasting before sending out apostles.
A spiritual fast isn't a diet. The goal isn't weight loss; it's spiritual sensitivity.
The 5 biblical types of spiritual fasts
1. The absolute fast
No food, no water. Short — usually 3 days or less. Esther 4:16 and Paul's 3-day post-Damascus fast (Acts 9) are the clearest examples. Not for beginners.
2. The normal fast
No food, water only. The most common biblical fast — Jesus' 40-day fast in the wilderness (Matthew 4:2) is described this way.
3. The partial fast (Daniel Fast)
Vegetables, fruits, water, no meat or rich food. Daniel 1 and Daniel 10 set the pattern. Sustainable for 7, 21, or 40 days. Most modern Christians start here.
4. The corporate fast
A community fasts together — Joel 2:15, Acts 13. The shared experience multiplies the spiritual weight.
5. The soaking / intercessory fast
An extended, Spirit-led fast for a specific breakthrough — Anna's lifelong fast (Luke 2:37) or the disciples fasting between Jesus' ascension and Pentecost.
How to start a spiritual fast
- Pick a fast you can finish. Start with 24 hours, not 40 days.
- Set the prayer focus. Surrender, intercession, direction, repentance, or warfare — pick one.
- Tell one accountability partner. Not the whole internet (Matthew 6:18). One person.
- Schedule the prayer time. The minutes you'd spend eating become the minutes you spend praying. That's the whole trade.
- Drink water. Always.
- Break the fast slowly. Broth, fruit, a small Daniel-Fast meal. Don't crash with pizza.
What to pray during a spiritual fast
Anchor each day to one prayer focus and use the hunger as a trigger — every time you feel it, return to the prayer. Try this 7-day rhythm:
- Day 1 — Surrender. "Not my will, but yours."
- Day 2 — Repentance. Psalm 51.
- Day 3 — Identity. Who God says you are.
- Day 4 — Family. Spouse, kids, parents.
- Day 5 — Calling. Direction for the next 90 days.
- Day 6 — Warfare. Ephesians 6.
- Day 7 — Thanksgiving + commissioning. Break the fast.
How to break a spiritual fast
Breaking is part of the fast. Start with broth or fruit, spend 15 minutes in thanksgiving before the first bite, and don't celebrate with excess. The body that just learned to obey the spirit can be untaught in one meal.
Spiritual fasting and the 75-day challenges
Fasting pairs naturally with longer discipline challenges. The Christian 75 Hard includes a weekly 24-hour fast; the 75 Hard alternative for Christians uses the Daniel Fast structure. Either way, fasting is the spiritual layer that turns physical discipline into discipleship.

Frequently asked about spiritual fasting
A spiritual fast is the intentional abstention from food (or another comfort) for a set period to seek God in focused prayer. Scripture treats fasting as a normal Christian rhythm — Jesus said 'when you fast,' not 'if you fast' (Matthew 6:16). It humbles the body, sharpens prayer, and creates space for breakthrough.
Pick a fast you can finish: a 24-hour water fast, a one-meal sunrise-to-sunset fast, or a 7-day Daniel Fast. Tie it to a specific prayer focus, tell one accountability partner, and protect the prayer time you'd normally spend eating. The free Avodah Spiritual Fast guide on this page walks through the full setup.
The main biblical fasts are: the absolute fast (no food or water — short, e.g. Esther 4:16), the normal fast (no food, water only — most common), the partial or Daniel Fast (vegetables and water — Daniel 1, 10), the corporate fast (a community fasts together — Joel 2), and the soaking/intercessory fast (extended, Spirit-led).
Beginners should start with a 24-hour fast (one sundown to the next). Intermediate fasters often run a 3-day or 7-day Daniel Fast. Extended fasts (21 or 40 days) belong to seasoned fasters under clear leading and, ideally, medical supervision.
Yes — for almost every kind of spiritual fast, water is encouraged. The exception is the very short absolute fast (Esther's 3-day, Paul's 3-day after Damascus). For anything longer than 24 hours, drink water; you're fasting from food, not hydration.
Anchor each day to one focus: surrender, intercession, direction, repentance, or warfare. Use the hunger as a prayer trigger — every time you feel it, return to the focus. The free guide includes a day-by-day prayer rhythm for 1-day, 3-day, and 7-day fasts.
Break a fast slowly and worshipfully. Start with broth, fruit, or a small Daniel-Fast meal. Spend 15 minutes in thanksgiving before the first bite. Don't celebrate the end with excess — the breaking is part of the fast.
