Spiritual Fast — Spoke

The 5 types of biblical fasts.

Scripture describes five distinct types of spiritual fasts. Each one fits a different season, prayer focus, and capacity. Here's all five, with examples and when to use them.

1. The absolute fast — no food, no water

Short and severe. Esther's 3-day pre-throne-room fast (Esther 4:16) and Paul's 3-day fast after Damascus (Acts 9:9) are the clearest examples. Never longer than 3 days. Not for beginners and not without medical clearance.

2. The normal fast — no food, water only

The most common biblical fast. Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness (Matthew 4:2) and Moses' 40 days on Sinai (Exodus 34) are normal fasts. For most modern Christians, a 24-hour normal fast is the entry point.

3. The partial / Daniel Fast

Vegetables, fruits, water — no meat, sweets, leavened bread, or rich food. Daniel 1 (10 days) and Daniel 10 (3 weeks) set the pattern. Sustainable for 7, 21, or 40 days. See our Daniel Fast guide.

4. The corporate fast

A community fasts together — Joel 2:15, 2 Chronicles 20, Acts 13. Shared spiritual weight, shared breakthrough. Run a corporate fast with your small group or whole church.

5. The soaking / intercessory fast

Extended, Spirit-led, for specific breakthrough. Anna fasted in the temple for decades (Luke 2:37). The disciples fasted between the ascension and Pentecost.

FAQ

What are the types of fasts in the Bible?

Scripture describes five main types: the absolute fast (no food or water), the normal fast (no food, water only), the partial or Daniel Fast (vegetables and water), the corporate fast (a community fasts together), and the soaking or intercessory fast (extended Spirit-led).

Which biblical fast is best for beginners?

A 24-hour normal fast (water only, no food) for your first time, then move to a 3-day or 7-day Daniel Fast. Save the absolute fast and extended fasts for after you have a sustainable rhythm.

Did Jesus do an absolute fast?

Jesus' 40-day fast in the wilderness (Matthew 4) is described as a normal fast — He hungered, which implies food abstention with water. An absolute 40 days is medically impossible; the 3-day Esther fast is the biblical model for absolute fasting.

What is the Daniel Fast?

The Daniel Fast comes from Daniel 1 and Daniel 10 — vegetables, fruits, water, no meat, sweets, leavened bread, or rich food. Often run for 21 days. See our dedicated Daniel Fast guide.
